My Family's Story

This book grew out of more than twenty years of interviews with my parents—first together, and later with my father alone after my mother passed. The story might have remained silent, had I not sought the answers that were weighing on my heart. My curiosity intensified around 9/11, when questions of identity and belonging became universal. Through unrelenting questions, I uncovered not only the untold truths of my own family, but also the larger story of Korea’s devastating division—told through their lives, their losses, and their resilience.

At just eleven years old, my father fled south from the northern region before war erupted, never imagining he would be separated from his family forever. What followed was a lifetime of longing. It was only after he had been in America for many years that nine letters from his sister and her children in the North were received, their only fragile lifeline, carrying love, hope, and grief across sealed borders.But Korea Reunited is more than one family’s story.It's a reflection of the universal human experience: the need for connection, the search for identity, and the power of remembering and passing on what must never be forgotten.
